IntraHealth Namibia, through the USAID-funded Reach Namibia project, has provided a meat slicer business start-up kit to a project beneficiary in Nyangana District, Kavango East region. This handover is part of the economic strengthening activities aimed at improving the livelihoods of households through sustainable income-generating activities.

The start-up kit, which includes a meat slicer machine, safety boots, gloves, overalls, an apron, and a saw, was given to the beneficiary, who is also a graduate of the Ehafo Letu caregivers' program. This program, a Reach Namibia project initiative, was designed to strengthen relationships between caregivers and their teenagers for improved parenting behaviour.

The beneficiary is a 26-year-old male resident of Karutci village in Nyangana district. He is a caregiver of an 11-year-old vulnerable child for whom he has been responsible for since 2022 when her mother left home and never returned. He is also the sole provider for a household of 14 members.

During the handover, the beneficiary expressed gratitude to the Reach Namibia project and assured that the profits made from the business will be put to good use. "Thank you, Reach Namibia, for making a difference in our lives. Life has been hard for my family, however, with this machine, I will be able to work hard and provide for my household as well as my community at large," the beneficiary said.

The beneficiary is also involved in the Village Savings and Loan (VSL) initiative of the Reach Namibia project, which demonstrates a commitment to improving his financial situation to support his family. As a start-up, the beneficiary will continue to receive ongoing business mentorship from the project to ensure that his business grows and is able to sustain him.

The Reach Namibia project is funded by PEPFAR through USAID and is implemented by Project Hope Namibia and IntraHealth Namibia.
