Transforming Health Outcomes Across Namibia

Current Projects

From urban centres to remote villages, IntraHealth Namibia implements high-impact health programmes that save lives and strengthen communities.

EpiC - Community-Based Care and Treatment Services (CBCTS) Project (Started: 2025)

Under the EpiC mechanism led by FHI 360, IntraHealth Namibia (IHN) implements Community-Based Care and Treatment Services (CBCTS) to support government efforts in improving health financing systems to advance the long-term sustainability of Namibia’s national HIV response.​​​​

  • Re-initiates clients who have interrupted treatment

  • Provides community-based care to improve adherence, retention, and continuity

  • Delivers PrEP services to individuals at heightened risk of HIV acquisition

  • Implemented across 12 priority geographic areas including Windhoek, Swakopmund, Rundu, and Katima Mulilo

  • Partners with WBCG, RnRT, HAM, MPower, and SWE

  • Provides technical support to strengthen government health financing and self-reliance

HUGUVARA: Empowering Adolescent Girls (Started: 2024)

Protecting school-going girls from HIV and unintended pregnancy through data-driven interventions

 

  • Identifies school-going adolescent girls (13-19) at moderate and high risk using a digital risk-assessment tool

  • Provides tailored, DREAMS-aligned prevention packages based on each girl’s risk profile

  • Strengthens referral systems between schools, communities, and government health facilities

  • Delivers age-appropriate reproductive health education, mentorship, and psychosocial support

  • Engages parents, teachers, adolescent boys, and young men to build supportive environments

  • Empowers girls with knowledge, confidence, and skills to prevent HIV infection and unintended pregnancy

  • Promotes school retention, wellbeing, and long-term health outcomes for adolescent girls

Integrated HIV and TB Services Project

(Started: 2023)

​IHN strengthens integrated HIV and TB services through facility- and community-based care, enhancing Strategic Information systems for improved data quality and evidence-based programme management.​

  • Enhanced TB screening in //Karas region, reaching 298 community members (June-October 2025)

  • Identified 37 TB-positive cases for treatment linkage and improved adherence monitoring for 19 clients

  • Targets all populations living with HIV, including adolescents, and pregnant and breastfeeding women

  • Reduces HIV transmission, maintains care for PLHIV, and supports prevention of mother-to-child transmission

  • Implements integrated community- and facility-based HIV and TB services in //Kharas, Hardap, and Omaheke

  • Provides facility-based support in Kavango East, Kavango West, and Zambezi regions

  • Strengthens Strategic Information (SI) systems in Ohangwena and Oshana to improve data quality and use Strengthened referral systems across community and facility levels for HIV and TB services

  • Funded by CDC Namibia under PEPFAR in partnership with MoHSS and development partners

Community Activites

Completed Projects

1. Health Information Systems Strengthening (2020-2023)

IHN partnered with the Ministry of Health and Social Services and USAID to launch an electronic patient management system and subsequently enhance capacity to ensure data integrity. The primary goal is to strengthen the country’s HIV data infrastructure.

  • Redesigned and rolled out ePMS Quantum, Namibia’s upgraded electronic patient monitoring system

  • Built national MoHSS capacity for data reporting, analysis, and quality use

  • Developed interactive Power BI dashboards for real-time programme monitoring

  • Supported MoHSS with WHO on HRH Situation Analysis and Strategic Plan (2020-2030)

2. DREAMS/Twagamenwa (2019-2023)

The project aimed to avert new HIV infections among Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) in Khomas, Oshikoto, and Zambezi regions, while strengthening linkages to care and providing comprehensive reproductive health services.

  • Reached over 70,000 AGYW with project activities over five years

  • Established 25 youth-friendly corners in high-volume health facilities

  • Delivered HIV testing, PrEP, post-GBV, and reproductive health services

  • Provided biomedical prevention services and referrals to AGYW sexual partners

  • Linked 55,560 AGYW to DREAMS care through youth-friendly corners

  • Served 17,532 AGYW with family planning services and 10,665 with post-violence care

3. Key Populations - Strengthening Technical Assistance and Response (KP-STAR), (2020-2025)

IHN led this national programme to scale clinical and community-based services, improve viral suppression, and enhance health services among key populations (KPs), while strengthening data management for monitoring, quality assurance, and planning.

 

  • Reached an average of 21,590 KP members per year with targeted HIV prevention interventions

  • Initiated over 17,711 KP enrolments on PrEP during the project period

  • Achieved viral load suppression increase from 93% in FY20 to 98% by Q3 FY24

  • Improved viral load coverage for eligible KPs on ART from 77% in FY20 to 94% in Q3 FY24

  • Trained 550 healthcare workers in KP-friendly, gender-affirming service provision

  • Developed KP competency standards for Namibia

  • Strengthened data systems for national HIV programme monitoring and planning

4. Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) Project (2021-2023)

IHN implemented a Global Fund-supported project in Omusati and Ohangwena regions to increase uptake of family planning, HIV testing services (HTS), ART, PrEP, and other health and non-health services for Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW). Led by the MoHSS as Prime Recipient.

 

  • Reached 62,751 AGYW (100.2% of target) through prevention campaigns and education

  • Referred 51,373 AGYW (103% of target) for HIV testing and other health services

  • Sensitised 12,423 community members (295% of target) on PrEP for AGYW

  • Sensitised 15,015 AGYW sexual partners (596% of target) on PrEP

  • Delivered HIV prevention campaigns, GBV education, and sexual reproductive health services in schools, tertiary institutions, and communities

5. REACH Namibia - Reducing HIV Vulnerability: Integrated Child and Youth Health Project (2023-2025)

The REACH Namibia project strengthens resilience and improves treatment outcomes for children and adolescents living with or exposed to HIV through integrated, youth-responsive health and social support interventions.

 

  • Targets adolescent girls and young women (10-24 years), adolescent boys and young men, parents, and caregivers

  • Reaches HIV-exposed infants and children living with HIV (CLHIV)

  • Improves uptake of youth-friendly HIV and health services • Strengthens resilience to HIV risk and improves treatment outcomes

  • Enhances prevention and response to GBV and VAC 

  • Supports sustainability of services for vulnerable children and youth

  • Implemented in five districts: Andara, Nyangana, Rundu, Ncamagoro, Nkurenkuru (Kavango East and West) 

  • Achieved 97% of HIV prevention target, 80% of GBV prevention target, and 64% of PrEP initiation target in FY24
